Pete Dove Back from the Ashes

A farmer for 40 years and hooked on nitro since 1987. Pete built his corn-car Fuel Altered from what a shop fire left behind, and he named it Back from the Ashes.

Back from the Ashes

Pete Dove farmed for 40 years around Shelbyville, Illinois. In 1987 a friend took him to the U.S. Nationals, and his first nitro warm-up hooked him for life. He went from bracket racing to crewing on a Top Alcohol Dragster that won NHRA national and division races, Indy in 1992 among them.

He came back to nitro in the 2000s, started collecting parts for a Fuel Altered in 2018, and went to work with the Lawson family, who licensed him in their funny car at Joliet. In 2020 the Lawsons' shop burned. A few weeks later John Lawson called and told Pete to come get what was left and see what could be used. With a chassis and parts already on hand, that became Back from the Ashes, the corn car, painted at John Lawson's Auto Rebuilders.

Pete's own shop grew a machine shop, The Shop at County Road 7, and Dove Fuels, which supplies nitromethane and methanol to racers. In 2025 Pete made the final at the last two IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series races, at West Salem, Ohio, and at the season finale in Dunn, North Carolina. Both finals went to drivers who race with us now: Ryan Hill and Paul Miller.

Pete's team exists because other people gave him chances, and he wants to pass those chances on. That's what our races are for.
